GUARDIA SANFRAMONDI

From the height of 428m, Guardia Sanframondi is the most populated town in the valley of Telesina with a circulation of 6,000 inhabitants; Guardia Sanframondi dominates the slopes on the lower right side downstream from the River Calore, 28km from Benevento.  The SS. 87 is a road that winds and climbs through the town offering a glimpse of the Mountain Taburno and of the plentiful land of olive trees and grape vines.  Wine (DOC Guardiolo, Aglianco, Greco, and Falanghina) and oil was quickly embraced by the Dop Sannio which fed the economy and invited quality tourism.  Other traditions suggestive of the zone are inherently present and show characteristics of the medieval system.  However despite its origin there is still controversy.

In its elevated position the powerful scaffolding of Norman foundations, with restored frescos, offers an all opened theatre, rooms for shows and meetings and a hanging garden dominating the historic centre.  Picturesque groupings of modest houses of the times, as well as others claiming to be more of a richer upper class, are intertwined by narrow streets made of and outlined in stone and are closed within the four doors (arcs of the entrance of the castle).  Found in this village is the outstanding Ave Grazie Piena (or Annunziata) church built sometime in the year 400 with its precious bell tower and inside a stucco wood ceiling from the 17th century, as well as the pipe organ and the beautiful canvases of the Napolitano painter De Matteis.

The town offers for others, diverse sacred and significant buildings, like the church of San Rocco (1575) with its original octagonal plans and of San Sebastiano with baroque jewels.  Displayed on the walls of the church are the conserved al frescoes of De Matteis, stuccos of Domenico A. Vaccaro and a silver sculpture of Gaetano Starace.  Also found within the village, made sometime in the year 600, is the convent of San Francesco (unfortunately today needing restorations) and in the lower parts of the town the Basilica-Sanctuary of the Assunta which is the parish church. Guardia Sanframondi is moreover noted as the “town of the battenti” , “battenti” referring to a group of people who perform an unusual  manifestation of religious folklore of great ancient origin; in the last weeks of August during the celebration of the customary rites of the Madonna dell’Assunta, there is a parade , a procession, rich of sacred representations with figures in costume and a large group of those people performing acts of mortification as a sign of penance trying to rid their sins.  Dressed in white vests and hoods with cut out eyes, these people in medieval costume continue the tradition of years past renewing the harsh and moving beatings and sacrifices made by the people.
